Staining will work once in a while depending upon the initial color of the wood (how dark), how lighter you want to make it and if you use a semi-transparent (pigmented stain). unlike dyes, pigmented stains are not as transparent. in fact, a pigmented stain is actually a thinned down paint. we all know that you can paint over a darker color.
