Cross-grain. sanding cross-grain tears the wood fibers so the sanding scratches show up much more, especially under a stain. the best policy is to always sand in the direction of the grain when possible. the scratching that does occur is then more likely to be disguised by the grain of the wood.. I want to sand the concave side smooth and then just let the edges float a little away from the wall. the problem is sanding the concaved surface smooth. i have a ras, but that would take forever. my belt sander is oos and leaks bearing? oil on the wood when i use it. [i may rebuild it at a later date-craftsman]. so i guess that leaves an angle.
